Yiddish Choir Workshop

Weimar, Germany, Europe 04. - 06 aot 2017
Led by Polina Skovoroda Shepherd, an internationally renowned Yiddish choir leader, composer and performer, Yiddish Summer Weimar warmly invites choir groups and individual singers from all over the world to join this workshop.   Polina’s choir work is united by the umbrella of The Polina Shepherd Vocal Experience and covers aspects of vocal music from large scale choral improvisation or highly arranged pieces and chamber groups. She currently leads four choirs in the UK and teaches internationally. Her specially developed choral methods are based on specific East European stylistic details, modal experimentation with attention to history and context.   The workshop will explore specific questions in Yiddish singing, including language, musical style, history and cultural context: How can a Yiddish song arrangement be different from other Jewish choral repertoire? How traditional or modern can a Yiddish choir be? How does The Other Israel affect the depth of musical substance in Yiddish song? The course will include choir music ranging from traditional SATB arrangements to fully improvised material.   Following the vision of founding artistic director Alan Bern, Yiddish Summer Weimar is a uniquely creative, intercultural community in which people of all ages and backgrounds are welcome every summer in Weimar for one month. The program consists of workshops, concerts of world-class musicians, dances, jam sessions, a lecture series and much more.   In 2017, our special topic is "The Other Israel: Seeing Unseen Diasporas." Israel today is home to a kaleidoscope of cultures from around the world. Yiddish culture is only one of these, alongside Iraqi, Moroccan, Ethiopian, Russian, and many others.
