Get to know Flannery

Hi, my name is Flannery.

I am 27 years old, born and raised in Bensheim, Germany but spent the bigger part of my last year in Vienna, Austria working in the management sector of the Vienna Symphony and the Wiener Konzerthaus.

Nevertheless I am very much connected to the German choir scene and proud chair of the Deutsche Chorjugend (German Youth choir Association) where we try to network between youth choirs all across Germany and also strive to fill the scene with as much life and music as possible.

When / where did you first come in contact with choral music

I started to sing in a choir when I was around 5 years old. It was a children's choir organised by the protestant church. I stayed in that choir until I was 16 but added school choirs, mixed choirs and project choirs on the way.

What is the greatest experience you’ve had inside the choral world?

My best experiences with the choral world are always made when I feel really connected with the people I sing with, usually through the music that we make together. This happens especially through spontaneous singing and the proud feeling that, once you know your repertoire, you can create amazing music literally everywhere! Most of these experiences were made during choir trips, international projects and choir festivals but there are also these moments in everyday life that can surprise you like that.

What is the greatest experience you’ve had outside the choral world?

Spending one year as a foreign exchange student in Stockton, California. I learned so much about the USA in that year, got to spend time with my father's side of the family and had loads of fun in High School! :)

What is the best part of the concert?

Living for the moment. Creating something beautiful that's only really there for a few seconds maximum but stays in your heart and mind for much longer.

Which activities of ECA-EC have you participated in, and what is your experience of it?

Eurochoir 2011-2014 (Italy, Czech Republic, Hungary, France), Youth Committee 2013-2015, YC 2016-2018, 3 General Assemblies (Hungary, Spain, the Netherlands), Europa Cantat Junior Festival (Norway) and Europa Cantat XIX (Hungary)

What is your favorite flavour ice cream?

Lemon

Lastly:

I can recite at least the first 60 digits of pi by heart (probably even more) because I listened to this song a few times
