Celebrating an anniversary

For the European Choral Association - Europa Cantat 2013 is an anniversary year. After having celebrated the 50th anniversary of the informal foundation (in Geneva in 1960, preceding the first festival in Passau in 1961), we are now looking forward to celebrating the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the legal association "European Federation of Young Choirs / Europäische Föderation Junger Chöre e.V. / Fédération Européenne des Jeunes Chorales" (later Europa Cantat and now, after the merger with AGEC, the European Choral Association - Europa Cantat). The association was founded and legally registered in Bonn on February 9th/10th 1963 in the presence of Mr. Bruno Heck who was then Youth Minister in Germany. We will celebrate the anniversary on February 14th at the occasion of the first meeting of our new Board and in the presence of most former Presidents of Europa Cantat, AGEC and the European Choral Association – Europa Cantat. Also some of our 2013 activities will be put in the frame of the anniversary celebration and we will finish the series of celebrations in November, celebrating with our members at the General Assembly in Pécs, Hungary, November 8th to 10th 2013.

New Youth Committee selected

The Board of the European Choral Association - Europa Cantat, in cooperation with the chair of the former Youth Committee, has constituted the new Youth Committee of the association for the years 2013 to 2015. Among a strong group of 18 candidates from 15 countries, the following young people were chosen for the Youth Committee of the coming years, based on the consideration of a good mix of ages, countries and regions in Europe, experience, connection to member organisations of ECA-EC and reach-out to young people in countries not so well-connected, yet: Catherine Al-Ghabra (UK), Jesse Boere (NL), Flannery Ryan (DE), Burak Onur Erdem (TR), Iva Radulovic (RS), for the festival in Pécs 2015: Emanuela Farago (HU), for the Eurochoir (until end of 2013): Eva Svarcova (CZ), with the support and advise of Jenny Grant (IRL). Two further candidates were put on the waiting list in case one of the current members drops out before 2015. The first meeting of the new Youth Committee will take place in Königswinter and Bonn, partly parallel to the first meeting of the new Board, February 14th to 16th 2013. The 2nd official meeting will take place in connection with the General Assembly in Pécs, Hungary, November 7th to 10th 2013. Further meetings may be arranged if additional funding can be found.

New membership advantages in 2013

Already since 2012 we have been able to offer our members a privileged full access to the Musica Database with a link from the password-protected area of our website. At the General Assembly 2012 in Toulouse we were able to present further advantages for our members, thanks to the cooperation with music publishers:

- Sulasol in Finland offers a discount of -20% to ECA-EC members on the list prices when ordering scores/sheets of Finnish choral music (cannot be combined with other discounts)

- Editions A Coeur Joie in France offers a reduced price for the annual “abonnement” for new scores, offered for the same conditions as to members of A Coeur Joie, for instance 141 instead of 167 EUR for the full abonnement per calendar year, or 15% discount on other categories. All subscribers to an abonnement get 15% discount on all orders.

Members will find detailed instructions on how to profit from these advantages in the password-protected section of our website >> here

World Youth Choir Press Release

In December 2012 the President of the World Youth Choir Foundation, Blasko Smilevski, published a Press Release, remembering the special moments in 2011/2012 (Performances Peace Nobel Price Award Ceremony in Oslo in December 2011 and session in Cyprus in August 2012) and informing about the fact that there will be no summer session 2013. Instead the World Youth Choir Foundation will focus on re-shaping the strategy of the choir and preparing a special session in Croatia in summer 2014, with concerts in the neighbouring countries, for which an application for EU-funding has been submitted.
