News from the Youth Committee

A visit to Strasbourg
Last month’s edition of the newsflash hosted a report from our Youth Committee which informed you of their successful application to take part in the European Youth Event 2014 in Strasbourg (9.-11. May) and even to receive funding from the European Youth Forum.  This month our Youth Committee member Flannery Ryan travelled to Strasbourg to take part in the preparation meeting for this important European event. The 40 young group leaders were invited to spend three intensive days organizing and exchanging ideas to shape the EYE and the YO-festival, both taking place inside and around the European parliament. The group sent by ECA-EC will be the only music related group funded by the Youth Forum and as such has a very important task to give music a voice in Strasbourg two weeks prior to the European parliament election with the help of an open singing on the main stage in the festival village.

The YC is still looking for young singers between 18-30 who are EU citizens and interested in joining the group. For more details please contact youthcommittee@eca-ec.org

Choral News from Russia

We have received a detailed and interesting article by Elena Shchapova about a special children's choir project in Russia, with around 1.000 children from all parts of Russia coming together to build a special choir which also performed at the closing ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Sochi recently. The project was initiated by the renewed All Russian Choral Society with which the European Choral Association - Europa Cantat has also been in touch at the end of last year in order to work out possible ways of cooperation in the coming years.

European Forum on Music in Bern

The European Music Council has announced details on the 4th European Forum on Music and 2014 EMC Annual Meeting, which the they will be organising together with the Swiss Music Council and the Yehudi Menuhin Forum and which will take place in Bern from 19 to 22 June 2014.

Music contributes significantly to the political and social development of a peaceful and integrative Europe. In times where faith in the European project amongst the continent’s citizens is wavering as a result of failing currencies, austerity measures and rising unemployment, music and culture can play a pivotal role in restoring trust and enthusiasm for Europe, and nurturing social cohesion throughout.

This year’s Forum will explore the theme of Music and Politics. The EMC is happy to confirm that former President of the European Parliament Enrique Barón Crespo will hold a keynote speech sharing his views on how music and politics are interlinked. The Forum will include panel discussions, lectures and a workshop on advocacy work. A special session will be dedicated to the European Agenda for Music offering the different working groups an opportunity to exchange and advance their topics, and there will be a music programme reflecting the broad diversity of Swiss music.
