Obituary - † Ruthild Sondermann

We mourn the loss of Ruthild,
the "soul" of our office

On May 5th 2014, our former staff member Ruthild Sondermann passed away almost two years after having been diagnosed with cancer. Ruthild worked for Europa Cantat and later the European Choral Association – Europa Cantat from July 2000 until July 2012 when she fell ill just before leaving for the EUROPA CANTAT festival in Torino, and she was officially a staff member until the end of 2013.

Ruthild became office manager of Europa Cantat, as it was then called, in July 2000, just before the EUROPA CANTAT festival in Nevers. She quickly felt at home in the world of choral singing in Europe, investing a lot of time and energy to do a great job and help whenever possible. She was the "soul" of our office, dealing with all the people who wanted and needed something from us, introducing students and volunteers to their work, and connecting Sonja, who was new to Bonn, to a lot of people and businesses in the region. She was also the main contact for our members and always enjoyed the opportunity to meet them "in person" at the General Assemblies or the festivals.

Ruthild loved to work with people, and she had a big heart. She was also a little “different”, finding her own ways and beliefs and her own style. She questioned traditions and rules and could be passionate about political and human issues. She was a loyal friend, sister and colleague, always there if others were in trouble. During her illness she showed a remarkable strength and openness that impressed all those who met her during these difficult times.

Ruthild shall greatly be missed in our office and in the choral world. Our condolences also go to her son Lukas and to her brothers and sisters and their families.

You will find a more detailed obituary including memories sent by present and former Board members and others who worked with Ruthild >> here and an online condolence page  >> here, where you can read more about Ruthild and also leave your personal message
(Please read the "Instructions" on the page). On this condolence page you will also find pictures and music reminding us of Ruthild, as well as the text read at the funeral service and the speech by Jeroen Schrijner, former President of Europa Cantat (only in German).

News from the VOICE project

NEW Project in VOICE: International Choral
Conductors Congress in Paris - September 2014

The VOICE project will help the Choral Conductors Congress in Paris to open up to a European audience, by allowing presentations by choirs from other EU countries and by inviting European conductors to attend the conference, in cooperation with the other coorganisers of the project. This wish to operate at the European level is a direct outcome of the positive experience of the VOICE project for our French partner. The conference aims to be one of the main exchange and capacity building platform in France, and opening it to an audience of European professionals will benefit the whole choral community and help strengthens the links between countries and professionals. www.congreschefsdechoeur.com

News from the Youth Committee

This month a part of the Youth Committee was joined by a few other choristers on a trip to the European Youth Event 2014 (EYE) which took place in Strasbourg 9.-11. May.
The EYE gave over 5000 young people from all around Europe and from many different organisations the possibility to
- visit the European Parliament two weeks prior to the EU elections
- talk to politicians during plenary sessions
- see first hand where the EU decision making takes place
- and meet, as well as discuss the future of Europe with many other fellow Europeans
In addition, the European Youth Forum did a great job organising many activities and stands outside of the parliament in the frame of the YO-Fest. All in all the EYE was a very interesting event and the Youth Committee enjoyed the possibility to meet again, exchange new ideas and discover Strasbourg and the European Parliament.

European Forum on Music in Bern

Music and Politics: a shared responsibility 4th European Forum on Music in Bern, Switzerland BONN/BERN - 21/05/2014
The European Music Council, together with local partners the Swiss Music Council and Yehudi Menuhin Forum, is proud to present the 4th European Forum on Music in Bern, Switzerland from 19 to 22 June 2014.

Come and join the debate on the relationship between music and politics, viewed by some as a natural given which must be fostered, and a contradiction in terms by others. Of all the art forms, music in particular has proven itself as a successful tool for nurturing social cohesion, facilitating peace and instigating change. In times where faith in the European project is wavering, what role can music play in restoring trust and enthusiasm for Europe? What can Europe learn from the host country, Switzerland, in which the different communities strive for a united Switzerland by respecting the diversity of its society? Music practitioners as well as representatives from the Swiss Parliament, European Commission and European Parliament will share their views on whether music and politics can work together to achieve mutual goals and reach common solutions for problems, or whether the two should be kept apart.

We are honored to announce that Ivo Josipovic, President of the Republic of Croatia and renowned composer, will be sharing his personal opinions on the topic in the opening keynote speech. Practical tips on engaging in cultural policy activities will be offered by Mary Luehrsen (NAMM) in a workshop on the dos and don’ts of advocacy work. Case studies from across the EMC membership (including a presentation of the Singing Europe research in the frame of VOICE, presented by ECA-EC) will give an insight into collaboration between music and politics in various countries, with a special session dedicated to the situation in Belarus hosted by Ole Reitov (Freemuse), Ingo Petz and Lavon Volski.

Coinciding with the Swiss Music Council’s 50th anniversary celebrations, Forum participants will be treated to a musical programme, offering an insight into the diverse Swiss music scene. Join representatives of the music sector from all over Europe at the 4th European Forum on Music. Register now at: www.emc-imc.org/efm

EMC Annual Meeting with elections
The annual meeting of the European Music Council (EMC) will also take place in Berne in connection with the European Forum on Music. The European Choral Association - Europa Cantat (ECA-EC) is nominating Kaie Tanner, Board member of ECA-EC and current EMC Board member as candidate for the Board.

IMC - #culture2015goal

#culture2015goal: Join your colleagues
in calling for urgent recognition
of culture’s role in development

The International Music Council has partnered
with other key international networks to launch
a Declaration on the Inclusion of Culture in the Sustainable Development Goals and is calling on the international community to support the campaign: "The future we want includes culture."

Together with the International Federation of Arts Councils and Culture Agencies (IFACCA); Agenda 21 for culture – UCLG’s Committee on Culture, the International Federation of Coalitions for Cultural Diversity (IFCCD), Culture Action Europe, Arterial Network and the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), IMC launched on May 1st a campaign calling on governments and policy makers defining the post-2015 UN Development Agenda to ensure that targets and indicators on culture be included as part of the Sustainable Development Goals. Details are provided in the Declaration on the Inclusion of Culture in the Sustainable Development Goals.

To support this campaign please urgently:
- Visit the website www.culture2015goal.net
and sign this Declaration either as
an organisation or as an individual
- Send this Declaration, or your own message,
to your country’s representative at the United Nations
(this will probably be via the Minister or Department for Foreign Affairs).
See the list of Permanent Delegates here
- Circulate this Declaration to your networks and spread the word.
The future we want includes culture. #culture2015goal

Why is this important?

Global expenditure on development over the next 15 years will be defined by the final goal document to be agreed by UN Member States in coming months. If culture is not mentioned, it will be extremely difficult for countries to elaborate policies and provide funds for projects that rely on culture’s role as as a driver and enabler of sustainable development.
‘Culture’ was completely absent from the Millennium Development Goals document. Don’t let this happen again.

Why is this urgent?

Over the past 12 months, the UN’s Open Working Group (OWG) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) holds working sessions to draft lists of goals, targets and indicators. Culture is almost absent. The OWG's draft of the SDGs will be finalized in July 2014.
Please act now and help raise awareness of the UN’s Member States of culture’s vital contribution to sustainable development.
