Below you will find our summer newsletter for the months of July and August (the next one will be sent in September 2014). It contains information about our projects happening in summer 2014, about our presence at the World Symposium on Choral Music in Seoul and about our summer publications. As usual we also include news from our Youth Committee, the VOICE project and of course the festival EUROPA CANTAT XIX in Pécs 2015, and we share information we have received from the European and international associations in which we are members.

Please forward this newsletter to your singing friends, if you work in a choral association, forward it to your members or translate the news which you find essential into your own language.

With best regards

Summertime - Holiday period

Summer has finally arrived and with the hottest days of the year our holiday period started here in Bonn. This year we are taking turns with our holidays so that at least one of us will always be reading mails. However, our office will not be occupied between August 5th and 17th when our Secretary General will be at the World Symposium for Choral Music in South Korea (see below), and there might be a few days in the 2nd half of August in which we cannot respond to phone calls.

We therefore ask for your understanding for the fact that the one person working cannot always answer all messages - less urgent issues may therefore have to wait until the middle of August or the beginning of September. However, if you start the reference line of your message with the word "urgent", somebody will always try to give a quick answer. Our office will be fully functional again from September 1st 2014

We wish you all a beautiful summer with a lot of great music and/or relaxing times!

Your team of the General Secretariat

ECA-EC presence in Seoul

The European Choral Association - Europa Cantat will show a good presence at the World Symposium on Choral Music in Seoul, South Korea, August 6th to 13th 2014

IFCM has kindly offered us, as well as all other Founding Members, a space on the central IFCM booth at the expo of the Symposium (booth Nr.: 7, 8, 9, from 10.00 - to 19.30, except on August 10th when the Expo will be closed all day). There, on the right hand side, you will find information about our association and our activities, including the detailed programme for the festival EUROPA CANTAT XIX in Pécs in 2015, our general programme of activities for 2015, the latest issue of ECmagazine and free gadgets (post-its, pencils as long as they are available). You will mostly also meet somebody to whom you can ask further questions since our Secretary General Sonja Greiner will be at the booth most of the time, and you may also meet our President Gábor Móczár, our Vice-President Jan Schumacher (2nd part of the symposium)  or some Board members.

If you want to learn more about how you can "benefit from the choral community" as conductor, composer, singer or choral manager, what ECA-EC is planning for the coming years, what you can expect at the festival EUROPA CANTAT in Pécs and if you want to meet us, you can also attend our session on Friday, August 8th 2014 from 16:15 to 17:30 in the
Cultural Space San at the National Theatre of Korea.

Announcing 2015 programme

Our brochure with the programme of activities for 2015 is ready and can already be read and downloaded on ISSUU >> here and as PDF >> here. (Individual files for each event will later be published under Events 2015.) Much of the programme in 2015 will be related to the festival EUROPA CANTAT XIX in Pécs, but there will be additional offers for singers and conductors elsewhere. Our brochure also explains who we are, with whom we are cooperating and how we are serving the choral world.
Please note: due to the late answer from the European Union concerning our 2014 funding we have not been able to print the usual amount of copies of the brochure and no mailing will be done. For the moment the brochure will only be distributed online and as digital print at the World Symposium on Choral Music. Should we be successful with our funding application under the Creative Europe programme, we will print and mail the usual amount of brochures in September 2014.

News from the VOICE project

The importance of statistics - Singing Europe
As reported in our last newsletter, Sonja Greiner, our Secretary General, and Côme Ferrand Cooper, project manager of VOICE presented the "Singing Europe" data-collection as part of the VOICE project at the European Forum on Music in Berne, organised by the European Music Council. You can now read their humoristic presentation with the non-existent EU Minister of Culture (left on this picture, with his "bodyguard" Nenad Bogdanovic next to him) talking with Sonja Greiner on the importance of having statistics in order to convince politicians about the importance of funding singing activities, using statistics from the European Hunters' Association as example >> here.

VOICE activities coming up
Our VOICE project manager Côme Ferrand Cooper will visit the Masterclass for conductors in Vaison-la-Romaine, one of the VOICE activities coming up, organised by A Coeur Joie. Another French VOICE partner IFAC is currently preparing the EuroChoir summer session 2014 which will take place in Saintes, France - you will find regular updates on their Facebook Page

Culture Action Europe Call

CAE calls on a reorganisation of the next European Commission for more coherent EU policies on culture

On 21st of May 2014 the Council of EU Ministers stated: “Culture is a cross cutting issue and a strategic approach to culture is therefore necessary”. Nevertheless, this approach is contradicted by the current structure of portfolios in the European Commission. Indeed, the impact that policies tailored for other sectors have on culture is not adequately taken into account in the implementation of policy in the EU and Member States. In order to overcome the fragmentation of the decision-making process in the relevant fields for culture, CAE and its partners launched a call for a revision of the breakdown of portfolios of the European Commission and the setting up of a comprehensive portfolio for culture including the digital agenda, as well as for the appointment of a politically strong Commissioner for this new portfolio. Read and share the call >> here.

The European Choral Association is supported by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union, by the German Ministry of Youth (BMFSFJ) and the City of Bonn
