VOICE Conference with GA in Barcelona

"Reach Out!" - annual conference of the
VOICE project in Barcelona
and ECA-EC General Assembly

Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, 21
- 23/11/2014

Deadline for Applications September 30th 2014

We will present the progress of the VOICE project and look ahead at our next cooperation project.

Along parallel sessions we will cover a wide range of topics: Open Singing as tool for audience development, methods to reach out beyond the choral world – with examples of good practice. We will present the Eurochoir evolution from VOICE to our new project. We will also discuss how to launch an inclusion strategy, the needs and challenges of National and Regional Youth Choirs as well as the economy of choral organisations and many other stimulating topics for whoever is interested in collective singing. Talk and listen is not all you can do in Barcelona, so you'll have a chance to discover the town through city visits and "walking groups", and enjoy carefully selected concerts.

The General Assembly of ECA-EC will take place on the Saturday morning.

Two special mentions also awarded

On September 18th 2014 the Jury of the European Award for Choral Composers chose the winning compositions of the 2014/5 edition. 39 compositions from 31 composers were submitted to the competition by 11 member organisations in 9 European countries, with 26 compositions in category A (a cappella), 11 in category B (with instruments) and 2 in category C (vocal jazz).

In category A the jury chose one winning composition, the “Missa Brevis” (2013) for mixed choir, composed by Hans Helsen (BE * 1989), submitted by the Flemish association Koor&Stem
In category B the Jury chose no winner but decided on a “special mention” for  two compositions
1.  “Fairy Ring” (2012) for female choir and harp,
composed by Maarten Van Ingelgem (BE *1976),                                                                               submitted by the Flemish association Koor&Stem
2.   “Diptychon” (2011) for female choir and violin,
      composed by Henrik Colding-Jorgensen (DK * 1944),
submitted by the Danish association for Amateur Music DAM
In category C the Jury chose no winner

The winning composition will be performed at the festival EUROPA CANTAT XIX in Pécs, Hungary, between July 24th and August 2nd 2015 by one of the guest choirs in the frame of a special evening concert. The scores which received a special mention of the jury will be offered to participating choirs for performance in choir-to-choir concerts.

Further information including details about the winning compositions and the composers can be found in the full Press Release in English, in French and in German.

Choral Upgrade in Europe

With the help of our project manager Côme Ferrand Cooper, we have submitted an application for support within the Creative Europe programme, for a multiannual cooperation project  under the title "Choral Upgrade in Europe - taking collective singing to a new level".

We are cooperating on this project with 13 other partners in 11 European countries, members and not-members (see project description), aiming at drawing new audiences to choral performances, turning more “non-singers” into singers, upgrading the training of choral conductors, composers and managers and developing an inclusion strategy under the motto “Sharing the Benefits of Singing”.

You will soon hear more about this project which includes a lot of activities such as the two EUROPA CANTAT festivals in 2015 and 2018, smaller festivals, three Eurochoir-sessions, projects bringing together several national youth choirs and a number of training courses and conferences, and you can find a first project description >> here.

We would like to thank our project manager as well as all our partners with their staff for their hard work in preparing what we believe is a high-quality application for a project which can make a change in the choral world in the coming years. We are expecting to hear from the European Union in March 2015 whether our project application has been accepted, and the project is planned to start on June 1st 2015 and run until the end of May 2019.

Events in August and September

Thanks to the offer of the International Federation for Choral Music (IFCM) we were able to share a booth with the World Youth Choir and other Founding Members of IFCM at the World Symposium on Choral Music in Seoul at the beginning of August 2014. At our booth, to which we attracted singers and conductors with gadgets and German chocolate and haribos, we distributed the Pécs programme brochure, our brochure with the activities 2015, ECmagazine 2/2014 and further information. We talked to many people including a number of Atelier conductors of the Pécs festival (you can find pictures on the Facebook page of the festival and on our own facebook page). Are you also Hung(a)ry for Singing? See further information below.

August also brought together 800 children and young people at Europa Cantat Junior in Bergen (see facebook page >> here) and gathered around 60 young singers for the EuroChoir session in Saintes (check their facebook page >> here)

Finally the summer activities finished in September with the Congress for conductors in Paris (in the frame of VOICE).

Visit of Minister of Culture in Bonn

In June 2014 Ms. Monika Grütters, German Minister of Culture since autumn 2013 (Bundesbeauftragte für Kultur und Medien der Bundesrepublik Deutschland) visited the "Haus der Kultur" in Bonn in order to meet representatives of the cultural associations based there. Sonja Greiner, Secretary General of the European Choral Association - Europa Cantat was invited to present the association and put forward urgent matters which could be discussed with Ms. Grütters.

At the meeting, at which the different associations presented issues important for their line of work, Sonja Greiner reported on the difficulties European associations based in Germany as well as other German associations experience when applying for European funding. Due to the German rule that associations receiving operational funding from German institutions are not allowed to build reserves, these associations run into serious cashflow problems while waiting for the last 20 or 30% of EU-funding which are only paid out several months after a project has been completed and the reports submitted, while all invoices have to be paid before submitting the report. Even though the Minister was not able to help directly, she suggested a meeting in her ministry with experts who discussed several possible solutions for these cashflow problems with Sonja Greiner and Simone Dudt, Secretary General of the European Music Council.

The issue will become important for the European Choral Association - Europa Cantat in 2015 at the end of the VOICE project, and the different possibilities will be pursued in the coming months.

News from the Youth Committee

After a bit of a summer break, the Youth Committee has started up regular meetings again with new ideas for projects and more support of previously established projects.

Planning already started in Bergen during the Europa Cantat Junior Festival, where the YC had the chance to have meetings in addition to the tasks they fulfilled within the Festival. To round up summer, part of the YC was also present at this year's Eurochoir session in Saintes, France, where ECA-EC with all its Youth Involvement possibilities was successfully introduced to all of the singers.

Three thought-provoking days
to look beyond the obvious assumptions and beliefs of the cultural sector
to explore the future borders and edges of culture
to leverage human networks and arts so as to actively shape social change
to shift the focus from “producing things” to “nurturing social capital”
to reassess culture’s contribution to social and economic regeneration – locally, nationally, and at the European level with an unusual rhythm of institutional moments, uncommon dialogues, and laboratory-style working sessions to stimulate unexpected connections for participants and speakers, and to help generate social capital.
