Summertime! For us this means that the complete team of the General Secretariat, our Board, Music Commission and Youth Committee are all on their way to the EUROPA CANTAT Festival in Pécs or are already there, looking forward to welcoming over 4.000 participants from around the world, invited musicians and guests between July 24th and August 2nd. Even though we will be working and reachable in principle, this may mean that messages that are not connected to the festival may not be answered immediately. In August we will be taking our summer holidays – mostly taking turns. However, our office will remain closed from August 10th to 17th 2015. Our next newsletter will thus reach you in September, after the summer season.

In this July/August newsletter we are inviting you to our conference “Sharing the Benefits of Singing”, combined with the General Assembly of ECA-EC and a special “Membership Day” in Helsinki this coming November, publishing our 2016 programme of activities, sharing issue 2/2015 of ECmagazine with you (which is at the same time issue 0 of the Festival Newspaper of EUROPA CANTAT XIX in Pécs), informing you how to meet us in Pécs and how to support the “Friends of Choral Music” if you will be attending the festival. We are also sharing the results of the “Leo Sings” project in which we were partners and informing you about the latest publications of Carus-Verlag in cooperation with ECA-EC.

Please forward this newsletter to your singing friends, if you work in a choral association, forward it to your members or translate the news which you find essential into your own language.

Looking forward to seeing many of you in Pécs soon,
With best wishes

Sonja Greiner, Secretary General

Discover our 2016 programme

Many of us are mostly thinking about the festival in Pécs now, but others may already have started planning the coming year. Just before leaving for Pécs, we have finalized the programme of activities under the label of ECA-EC for 2016. We have already uploaded on our Website the PDF version of the brochure, which is also available as ISSUU file, as well as a PDF of the Calendar Flyer. Please feel free to distribute these documents to your members, friends and colleagues!

You will discover a rich and diverse programme with activities of ECA-EC (Eurochoir and conferences), activities offered in partnershipo with ECA-EC (Choralies, Festival di Primavera, Singing Week in Gent and numerous offers for conductors, singers, composers and managers)as well as activities from our network, promoted by ECA-EC (replading the former “recommended events”).

The biggest event for choirs and singers in 2016 will be the Choralies festival organised by A Coeur Joie, gathering several thousand singers in Vaison-la-Romaine in Southern France and offering a rich choice of ateliers. The Festival di Primavera organised by Feniarco in Tuscany will bring together over 1.000 singers in children’s and youth choirs, within and outside schools. Our Flemish member organisation Koor&Stem is offering a Singing Week in Ghent to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Vlaamse Federatie van Jonge Koren.

Conductors and individual singers can choose from a number of activities such as the Eurochoir 2016 in Italy, the (Inter)national Congress for Conductors in France, the Oratorio Academy in Pomáz, the Capriccio Français Summer Academy in Barcelona, the course for starting choral conductors in Ghent and the Early Music Workshop in connection with the Early Music Festival in Utrecht as well as several activities for conductors from the network, promoted by ECA-Ec.

Composers can attend the European Academy in Italy or the Mediterranean Forum in Istanbul, which is also open to conductors and managers.

You can also start planning ahead with the dates published for some events in 2017 and 2018.
Browse the full programme in our brochure and on our Website under “Events 2016” – Detailed information about the events (workshop titles and conductors, working languages, levels of difficulty, participation fees, tourist offers etc.) will be uploaded to our Website in the coming weeks and are usually available from the Websites of the organisers of the event.

LEO Sings! Project Results

The LEO Sings! cooperation project initiated an exploration of language, geography, history and culture of European vocal music diversity through meeting others, sharing experience and culture of other people and regions, giving singers, teachers and trainers the opportunity for exchange. Collective singing practice is strongly reflected in traditional and amateur singing, which is generally organized on a local basis. The context of cooperation at the European level gave the opportunity to understand and benefit from each others' knowledge, skills, training programs and practices.
One-to-one networking has been enlarged on a broader basis to organisations and institutions. Thus, existing networks (singing teachers, choirs and conductors federations, various musical and pedagogical organisations, etc.) could extend to interdisciplinary contacts and vision.
Partners have formalised some observation and evaluation of the issues discussed and analysed during the partnership. Community, media and policy for vocal identity are the challenges introducing possible outcomes proposed by the partners, to be relayed in order to influence public policies supporting vocal culture and education, and to continue sharing innovative voice teaching methods and practices.
A large community of singing and singers was born and have been growing up with LEO Sings!, and will continue in the same spirit of openness through "The Singing Roadshow", a mobile vocal academy, that will bring singing to all kinds of venues, and will be developed in the months to come.
