Press Release from the World Youth Choir Foundation

Dear singers, partners, friends and supporters of the World Youth Choir,

It is our pleasant duty to remind you of all the World Youth Choir highlights in the past year, and to use this opportunity to introduce you to new activities we are to be involved in.

Cyprus 2012. Artistically led by Cecilia Rydinger Alin, Sweden (a cappella repertoire) and Ayis Ioannides, Cyprus (vocal-instrumental repertoire). With carefully selected singers, recruited by our partners worldwide and an international jury, the choir was a wonderful instrument with awe-inspiring sound, performing in a number of successful concerts across Cyprus. Oslo, December 2011. ''After a tremendous winter session with the World Youth Choir in Belgium 2004, I was bursting with joy of being able to receive the Choir in my own home town, Oslo, in 2011.They came, indeed, with lots of musical resources, stamina, musical surplus, temperament, forbearance and lots of good humor. Unforgettable days! Thanks a lot!'' ... says Grete Pedersen, the conductor of the WYC performances at the University of Oslo anniversary and the Nobel Peace Prize Award ceremonies 2011. An extraordinary event that we can all be proud of. (Videos here and here)

However, the economic reality across the world is not bright. Public deficits became the main concern of governments in Europe, and this has massively touched subsidies for culture. Consequently, paralyzing blows on culture have been struck in many countries. The World Youth Choir Foundation is not immune to these challenges. We have carefully explored all possibilities for 2013. Unfortunately, under these global financial circumstances and since the patrons are not willing to compromise the quality of the World Youth Choir we will not be able to organize a regular summer session with recruitment procedure in 2013.

However, this does not mean that there will be no World Youth Choir activities in 2013. More than 1000 World Youth Choir alumni members will have a chance, upon their own choice, to gather once again in Portugal, at the Lisbon Summer Music Festival in June 2013. (Announcement) Further special projects are possible in 2013 and will be announced separately.

The patrons have decided to seize the opportunity and use the year ahead for the strategic development of this unique project, working intensely on increasing resources, improving the recruitment procedures, the relations with our partners and developing a steady visibility and marketing campaign.

The Foundation Board of patrons underlines its commitment in preserving the consistency and continuity of all World Youth Choir programs and activities in 2013 and beyond, continuing its mission of “being a truly educational and social experience in different vocal traditions on the highest artistic level while building bridges between young singers from diverse cultures!“

Continuous updates on the recruitment process for the 2014 summer session in Croatia and neighboring countries hosted by Jeunesses Musicales Croatia, recruitment process and new plans will follow in 2013.

Thank you believing in and supporting the World Youth Choir and see you in Croatia 2014!

With best regards and wishes for a happy festive season,
